Current Projects

  • Fiction

My linked-story collection, THE BONES OF THE MOUSE MAKE THE CAT, takes place across the twentieth century inside, and away from, the community of a small truck circus. It received the W.S. Porter Prize.

My novel manuscript DIVISION OF BIRDS tells the story of a man raised in the circus and the mother he does not know. I have also completed a YA dystopian novel manuscript, NEVER HOLD YOUR BREATH IN A MIST.

Current fiction projects include a literary novel concerning a house full of whales, an overdue book, and a scattered family.

My flash-prose chapbook, Staircases Will Outnumber Us, is available from Red BIrd. For a taste of my writing, please see Selected Writing and my blog.

  • Poetry

I write poems using constraints and, sometimes, traditional forms. I work on erasures and collaged texts as meditation and reanimation. A chapbook of erasure poems, Trees Full of Walking, is forthcoming from Dancing Girl Press.

  • The Other Whale

The Other Whale is an erasure made with paint on the pages of a 1942 edition of Moby-Dick from Dodd, Mead and Company. The resulting text is different from the text of By Whale: An Erasure, which you can download for free from my Select Writing page
